Chateau Smith Haut Lafitte Rouge Cru Classe Pessac-Leognan 2018

Deep ruby color with youthful gloss. The nose opens with cassis, ripe cherry and blueberry, then layers of bay leaf, licorice and a subtle smoky flint note that speaks of the gravelly terroir. The palate is full bodied yet poised, driven by fine grained, densely knit tannins. Bright acidity carries concentrated dark fruit through the midpalate, keeping the wine energetic rather than heavy. The finish is very long and detailed, lingering with red berry lift, licorice, baking spice and a graphite like mineral thread. The 2018 vintage delivers impressive density and precision, drinking well after a generous decant and built for extended cellaring.
